Michael Burson, MA, LCMHCA, NCC

Michael earned his Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from UNC Charlotte in 2016, where he also got his BA in Psychology and Anthropology. He is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate in the state of North Carolina, and a Nationally Certified Counselor. He has experience working with clients on a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, interpersonal problems, family concerns, academic and student success, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, motivation, drug and alcohol concerns, grief, trauma, self-harm, and suicidal thinking. He is also in the process of becoming a certified yoga instructor and brings topics of mindfulness and wellness into his work as a therapist.

Michael draws from several different counseling theories including Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, but strives to be individual and intersectional in his approach with helping clients towards their goals. He finds that an eclectic style often works best and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to mental health. Michael is well-informed about the needs of the LGBTQ+ population and working with clients to find and express their authentic selves.

Michael is warm and casual and works to meet clients where they are on their mental health journey. He understands that the purpose of therapy is unburdening, and is here to unpack those burdens with you so your journey forward is that much easier.
